The Liberty men's indoor track & field team swept the ASUN Conference weekly awards on Wednesday, courtesy of redshirt junior Christian Lyon (Men's Track Athlete of the Week), junior Kyle Mitchell (Men's Field Athlete of the Week) and John Hicks (Men's Freshman of the Week).
Lyon was honored for the second straight week after winning the Liberty Flames Invite men's 200 title (season-best 21.08) and placing second in the 4 x 400 relay. The native of Fountain, Colo., currently ranks No. 2 in Liberty history, No. 3 in ASUN Conference history and No. 22 nationally this season for the 200-meter distance.
Mitchell's ASUN Men's Field Athlete of the Week award was his second in a row and the fourth of the Kingston, Jamaica native's career. He shattered his own ASUN Conference all-time record by over a foot with his winning shot put mark of 61-3 at Saturday's Liberty Flames Invite. He now ranks No. 2 in program history and No. 32 nationally this season.
A native of Romney, W.Va., Hicks recorded the first victory of his collegiate career, thanks to a personal-best 57-0.25 effort during the Liberty Flames Invite men's weight throw competition. He tops the ASUN men's weight throw performance list this season and ranks No. 9 for the event in program history.
Lyon, Mitchell and Hicks are all entered in the South Carolina Invitational, to be contested Friday and Saturday at the Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex in Columbia, S.C. Liberty will also send a group of athletes to Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va., for Friday and Saturday's Doc Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
