During the month of November, Liberty student-athletes paid it forward by serving the community through different means.
At the beginning of the month, student-athletes concluded Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat, a canned food drive in which collected cans were distributed to Lynchburg Daily Bread, Park View Community Mission, Bedford Christian Ministries and Liberty University Public Health. The Liberty lacrosse team paced all teams with 1,573 cans collected.
"It's important to serve the community of Lynchburg because it is a community of people that live around the university," said Liberty women's lacrosse senior Abby Britton. "Lynchburg is a place where student-athletes can connect and engage with families in the community while making lasting relationships."
On Nov. 4, the Liberty track & field, swimming & diving and lacrosse teams sent volunteers to decorate the course and cheer on runners at the CASA Superhero Fun Run.
From Nov. 1-17, Liberty Academic Affairs for Athletics organized Share the Warmth, a campaign aimed at collecting new and gently used coats, scarves, hats, gloves and blankets. These items were packaged and distributed to the homeless and those in need throughout the Lynchburg area. Liberty Flames student-athletes collected over 50 coats and more than 200 warm accessories.
"This November, the men's tennis team was able to give back to our Lynchburg community through different campaigns. One of them was Share the Warmth," stated Liberty men's tennis senior Diego Castano. "It is always great to be able to serve others and display God's love toward them."
The Liberty men's basketball team participated in Chocolate Bingo at Runk & Pratt Senior Living Communities on Nov. 8, while Liberty field hockey and lacrosse took part in Chocolate Bingo on Tuesday (Nov. 29).
On Nov. 15, student-athletes participated in another Thank-A-Thon event, calling Flames Club members to thank them for their support. The Flames Club's Mission is to generate financial resources to support the three-fold Liberty athletics mission of training champions for Christ, providing a world-class student-athlete experience and achieving victory with integrity.
In December, Liberty Flames student-athletes will be involved in more community service activities, including:
• Sandusky Elementary School Read-A-Thon (Dec. 4-6)
• Volleyball-A-Thon (Dec. 13)
• Salvation Army Bell Ringing (Dec. 15)
