Liberty's Steve Feister continued his impressive senior season, placing fourth in Section A of the men's javelin during a lightning delay-marred Friday at the 89th Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Lady Flames' top performance of the day came in the 4 x 400 relay, when the quartet of Nicole Leonzo, Ansley Gebben, Delaney McDowell and Erin Edmond advanced to Saturday's final with a time of 3:46.10.
Men's Day Three Recap
Feister's top throw of the evening, a 231-4 effort, came on the fifth attempt of the Pennsylvania native's impressive series. Five of his six throws landed at 221-10 or longer.
Teammate Denzel Pratt followed in seventh place in Section A of the javelin, thanks to his second-round throw of 220-1. Pratt added six inches to his own Liberty freshman record and fell just six inches shy of his lifetime best in the event.
Coming off of an indoor season which saw him win the Big South men's triple jump title and place second at the IC4A meet, Darrel Jones made a solid outdoor debut in the event on Friday. He reached 49-1 on his sixth and final attempt, placing ninth in Section B.
Zach Davis cleared 6-7 in his first high jump competition of the outdoor season, tying for 13th place in Section B.
Liberty recorded its fastest 4 x 400 relay time since 2013, a 3:15.44, to place 14th of 34 teams in the prelims. All four Flames clocked splits of 49.0 or faster, including Jeff Jacobs (49.0), Michael Todd (48.5), Colin Schultz (48.9) and Stephen Racanelli (48.8).
Later in the day, Ryan Davis, Jacobs, Racanelli and Todd teamed up for a sprint medley relay time of 3:27.04, finishing ninth overall.
Davis had earlier clocked a wind-aided 110 hurdles time of 14.97 seconds, tying for 34th place in the prelims.
Women's Day Three Recap
Liberty's 4 x 400 squad defeated Kansas to win its heat and post the fourth-fastest qualifying time among the 32 entrants. Splits included 57.6 for Leonzo, 56.8 for Gebben, 57.0 for McDowell and 54.4 for Edmond, who became the No. 4 quartet on Liberty's all-time list. The Lady Flames will have a chance to improve on that time in the finals at approximately 5:40 p.m. Eastern on Saturday.
Just after the first of two lightning delays on Friday, Kate Flower and Dana Mercer competed in the women's 100 prelims. Flower placed 24th with a season-best time of 12.05, while Mercer's personal-best 12.13 clocking put her in 28th place.
The Texas Relays will wrap up on Saturday, with Mychelle Cumings getting Liberty's day started in Section B of the women's discus at 11 a.m. Eastern.
Meanwhile, Liberty's competition at the VertKlasse Meeting will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday morning, with David Scouten throwing the men's hammer for the Flames.
