In keeping with the swell of local community support, Liberty Athletics has announced it will add a special helmet decal during this weekend's football game to honor the recent shooting of two local journalists.
The Flames will wear the special helmet decal during their home opener against Delaware State, Saturday night, at Williams Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
WDBJ 7 reporters Alison Parker and Adam Ward were tragically killed during a live broadcast, last Wednesday, at Smith Mountain Lake, which is located about an hour from Liberty University's campus.
Liberty's players will wear a helmet sticker that features the No. 7 and teal and maroon ribbons, along with the initials of both victims. Teal was Parker's favorite color, while the maroon ribbon represents Ward, who graduated from Virginia Tech in 2011.
WDBJ 7, the local CBS affiliate in Roanoke, Va., has had a long-standing tradition of providing coverage for Liberty Athletics and its student-athletes that hail from the New River Valley.
A scholarship fund has been established to honor both victims through their alma maters. Parker graduated from James Madison in 2012 and Ward graduated from Virginia Tech in 2011.
