Senior Jennifer Smith led a 1-2-3 Liberty sweep of the invitational section of the women's hammer, beginning the Liberty Collegiate Invitational, Thursday afternoon.
The invitational section included eight competitors, including four Lady Flames and four Lynchburg Hornets coached by Smith's husband, former Liberty standout thrower Ryan Smith. Jennifer Smith bested both her teammates and her husband's charges, recording the four longest throws of the day. Her top effort measured 165-11, just seven inches shy of her personal best.
Liberty freshmen claimed the next two spots, with both recording personal-best throws. Runner-up Dasiana Larson stretched the tape to 161-3, improving upon her previous best by more than 17 feet and eclipsing the Liberty freshman record of 156-10, co-held by Caitlyn Sutterfield (2004) and Mychelle Cumings (2012). Larson now ranks No. 5 in program history.
Classmate Holly Arey followed in third place at 153-1, adding more than eight feet to her previous best.
The Liberty Collegiate Invitational will resume Friday at 1 p.m. with the decathlon 100-meter dash.
