
Liberty Opens Season with 3 IC4A Qualifiers

Liberty got its 2010 outdoor track & field season off to a successful start on a light day of action with three IC4A-qualifying marks, Friday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C. Elliot Galeone and Ryan Bell hit the javelin standard, while Ryan Smith qualified in the hammer.
Galeone (R-Jr., White Hall, Md.) uncorked a career-best 207-10 in the javelin, taking meet runner-up honors for the second consecutive year. Teammate Bell (So., New Wilmington, Pa.) followed in fifth place, at 198-2.
Smith (R-Fr., Winder, Ga.), making his outdoor collegiate debut, placed eighth in the hammer at 174-6.
On the women's side, Melinda Bendik (Jr., Odessa, Texas) shone in the hammer. She placed sixth with a 160-4 toss, the longest throw by a Lady Flame since 2002. Bendik now ranks No. 2 in program history, behind only hammer record holder Keri Wallace.
The Coastal Carolina Invitational will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. The day's first events include the women's 5K, men's discus, women's high jump and women's pole vault.
