3/27/2010 12:00:00 AM | Track and Field
Liberty sophomore Melanie Sims and redshirt senior Oronde Vassell swept the women's and men's long jump titles in record-breaking fashion, highlighting Saturday's action at the Washington & Lee Track & Field Carnival.
The victories by Sims (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) and Vassell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) marked two of Liberty's dozen top eight placings on the day.
Women's Meet Recap
Sims' meet-record long jump measured 18-1. A new personal best for the sophomore, it was the best outdoor long jump by a Lady Flame since Charlene Hibbert posted an 18-8 at the 2008 Big South Championship. Aurielle Green (Fr., Williamsburg, Va.) added a seventh-place long jump finish, at 16-6.
Both Sims and Green also starred in straightaway races on Saturday. Sims clocked 15.48 seconds, earning fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles, while Green's season-best 12.63 made her the 100-meter dash runner-up.
Also pulling double duty was Christina Mitchell (So., Monroe, Va.). She tied for second place after high jumping 5-1.75. Mitchell then crossed the line third in the 400-meter hurdles, stopping the clock at 66.20.
Liberty claimed two of the top four positions in the 800-meter run, courtesy of underclassmen. Meghan Burggraf's (Fr., Lynchburg, Va.) personal-best 2:16.86 was good enough for second place, while Hannah Hunt (So., Sewickley, Pa.) ran a 2:23.02 to place fourth.
Men's Meet Recap
Vassell not only set a meet record on his 23-7.25 long jump, but his career-best leap also exceeded the IC4A standard. Liberty now boasts a trio of IC4A long jump qualifiers, also including Aaron Johnson (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Kevin Reddington (Fr., Vancouver, Wash.).
Cameron French (Fr., Culpeper, Va.) chipped in an eighth-place effort in the long jump, sailing out to 21-2.
Vassell was not done, as the senior also contested the 100-meter dash. He crossed the line fourth, in 11.10 seconds.
Freshman Russell Allen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) came in under the existing 110-meter hurdles meet record, posting a personal-best 15.17. However, he was denied victory in the event by Kutztown's TJ Longmore, finishing in the runner-up position by only .01 seconds.
Liberty will now prepare for its first home outdoor meet of the season, Friday and Saturday's Liberty Collegiate Invitational. The meet at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex will begin Friday at 1 p.m., with the decathlon and heptathlon.
