Tommy Beecher, the former starting quarterback at South Carolina who recently signed a scholarship with Liberty, could have a familiar target downfield in 2009, as his former Gamecock teammate, Freddie Brown, has also signed a scholarship with the Flames.
Brown, a three-year wide receiver with the Gamecocks, will be completing his undergraduate degree in African-American studies at South Carolina this summer.
The University will be submitting waivers with the NCAA once Beecher and Brown complete their coursework, petitioning for both student-athletes to be able to complete their final year of athletics eligibly at Liberty.
"Just like Tommy, we at Liberty are thrilled that Freddie Brown has decided to join our program," commented Flames head coach Danny Rocco. "As we enter the 2009 season, we are looking to replace some departing seniors at the wide receiver position. We believe that Freddie will help us to make this year's group as deep and talented as any group we have had since my arrival three seasons ago."
Since redshirting during his true freshman season in 2005, Brown has seen significant playing time as a part of Steve Spurrier's offense. The 6-3, 210-pound wide receiver has caught 38 passes for 408 yards during the past three years in a Gamecock uniform. He has seen playing time in 31 games, starting eight of those contests.
As a redshirt freshman, Brown finished the 2006 campaign by pulling in 14 receptions for 147 yards, doing so during the final six games of the year. He started four of those six games, turning into South Carolina's No. 3 receiver.
In 2007, Brown saw playing time in all 12 games, finishing the year with a career-best 17 receptions for 195 yards. He started in three games (Georgia, Kentucky and North Carolina) and finished with a season-best three catches for 50 yards in the Gamecocks' 38-21 victory over Mississippi State.
This past season, Brown saw playing time in seven games, starting against Georgia. He hauled in seven passes for 66 yards, including his first collegiate touchdown reception in a road game at Vanderbilt.
Prior to his days at South Carolina, Brown was a standout at Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C, and Robinson High School in Charlotte, N.C.
During his senior year at Byrnes, he caught 68 passed for 978 yards and 14 touchdowns, including three touchdowns passes in a state semifinal contests. During two seasons of competition at Robinson, he recorded 86 receptions for 1,486 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Brown, who was also an outstanding basketball player and scored 1,269 points at Robinson, was rated as the No. 14 best football player in the state of South Carolina and the 49th best wide receiver in the nation by Rivals.com as a senior.
