With the win, Liberty moves to 9-3 on the year. William & Mary drops to 5-8. In the midst of a nine-game homestand, the Flames remain unbeaten through the first six contests.
The host Flames struck for four, two-out runs in the home half of the opening inning. Left fielder Jeff Jefferson (So., Danville, Va.) began the uprising by being hit by a pitch. Designated hitter Doug Bream (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) followed with a double into the left field corner to chase home Jefferson with the first run of the game.
Catcher Errol Hollinger (Sr., Upland, Calif.) made it back-to-back doubles, lining a two-base hit into the left-center field gap, plating Bream for a 2-0, Liberty advantage. The next Flames batter, first baseman Trey Wimmer (Fr., Greenwood, S.C.), made it 4-0, in favor of Liberty, by launching his second home run of the year over the right field wall.
The Flames added to their advantage in the second inning. Right fielder Casey Brown (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif.) led off the frame by lining a double down the left field line. After the next batter, second baseman P.J. Jimemez (Jr., Yacaipa, Calif.), was hit by a pitch, both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Shortstop Matt Williams (Fr., Franklin, Tenn.) followed with a run-scoring single for a 5-0 Liberty lead. Jimenez plated the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by center fielder Curran Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.), giving Liberty a 6-0 edge.
The Tribe got on the scoreboard in the top of the third frame. With one out, catcher Chris Jensen singled through the left side of the infield, and moved to second on a ground out by left fielder Stephen Arcure. Shortstop Lanny Stanfield singled to left, plating Jensen with William and Mary's first run of the contest.
In the bottom of the inning, Liberty scored for the third straight frame, sending 12 men to the plate. With two outs, Casey Brown ripped a double into the right field gap and moved to third on a balk. Jimenez followed with an infield single, to score the Flames right fielder. The Liberty second baseman advanced to second on an errant throw by Tribe second baseman James Williamson.
The next batter, Williams, drove in Jimenez from third base, upping Liberty's lead to 8-1. After stealing second base, Williams scored on a single by Redal for the third run of the inning. Two batters later, Doug Bream singled home a run for a 10-1 Liberty lead. Later in the frame, the Flames added three more runs with two outs on a dropped fly ball by the William & Mary center fielder Jeff Jones and a fielding error by the third baseman Tyler Stampone on a Tyler Bream (Fr., Zelienople, Pa.) ground ball.
The teams exchange single runs in the fourth inning. In the top half of the frame, the Tribe pushed across a run on a triple by Jones and a sacrifice fly by Stampone. In the bottom of the frame, Liberty scored a run on a RBI single by Jefferson.
Trailing 14-2, William & Mary cut into the Liberty bulge on the scoreboard, scoring six runs in the fifth frame. Right fielder Rob Nickle started the outburst with a two-out RBI single. Jones followed with a two-run double to the left-center field gap. The next batter, Stampone, plated the fourth run of the inning with a single through the middle. After Tribe designated hitter, Chris Forsten, was hit by a pitch, first baseman Tadd Bower doubled home the final two runs of the frame, trimming the Flame advantage to 14-8.
In the top of the sixth inning, William & Mary sliced the Liberty lead to one. Capitalizing on a hit batsman and a walk, the Tribe plated its first run of the frame, when Nickle singled. Jones followed with a run-scoring single, cutting the Flames' edge to 14-10. After a pitching change, back-to-back singles by Stampone and Forsten, each brought home William & Mary runners. Stampone then scored on a fielder's choice ground out by Brower for the final run of the frame, slashing Liberty's lead to 14-13.
The Flames added a run for a two-run cushion in the bottom of the inning. Jefferson reached on a wild pitch on a third strike, and advanced all the way to third base on an error by second baseman Williamson on fielder's choice ground ball by Doug Bream. The Liberty left fielder then upped the Flames' advantage to 15-13, by scoring on a grounder by Hollinger.
After the only inning neither team scored in the seventh, the Flames put the game away with three runs in the eighth. Redal and Jefferson began the frame with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Redal came home on a grounder to third base by Hollinger, which was misplayed by Stampone for an error. Wimmer followed by lifting a RBI sacrifice fly to plate Jefferson with the second run of the frame. Tyler Bream capped the scoring in the inning for Liberty, chasing Hollinger home with a double into the right field corner for the final margin of 18-13.
Reliever Cody Brown (Sr., RHP, Cumming, Ga.), the third Liberty pitcher in the contest, recorded the win to run his season mark to 1-0. The right-hander allowed one run on two hits over the last 3 2/3 innings.
William & Mary starter Reid Killen takes the setback to drop to 0-1 on the year. The freshman right-hander gave up six runs on five hits in two innings, before being lifted for a reliever.
Liberty had 16 hits and benefited from seven Tribe errors in the game. Seven Flames had two hits each in the victory. Hollinger and Wimmer each drove in three runs for Liberty.
William & Mary had 12 hits in the offensive contest. Tribe center fielder Jones collected three hits in the game.
The Flames open their Big South Conference schedule this weekend by hosting the Charleston Southern Buccaneers in a three-game series at Worthington Stadium. The conference series and final three games of a nine game homestand are scheduled to get underway Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
