On his next-to-last throw of Saturday's men's shot put competition at the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, Liberty senior Clendon Henderson jumped from sixth place all the way up to first with a career-best 61-3 effort. His throw, which set new Liberty and Big South records, held up to give the Texas native his second victory in as many days at the prestigious meet.
Henderson (Meadow, Texas), coming off a dramatic win in the discus Friday evening, entered Saturday's shot put with a 55-4.25 personal best, the shortest of the event's entrants. He boosted his personal best to 56-8.75 on Saturday's second attempt. However, he fouled his next two throws and entered his fifth attempt sitting in sixth place, two-and-a-half feet behind leader John Caulfield of UCLA.
The Liberty senior had not thrown the shot put since placing 14th at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 14. Yet, he was able to put it all together on his next-to-last attempt on Saturday. His 61-3 distance broke teammate and classmate Jon Hart's (Wyomissing, Pa.) Liberty and Big South record of 57-7.5 and ranks No. 4 on the NCAA national shot put performance list this season.
Caulfield joined Henderson in the 60-foot club on his sixth throw, marking a 60-3.75, but could not overtake the Flames' senior. For Henderson, his third personal best of the Texas Relays qualified him for the NCAA East Regional Championships and also represented a "B" qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials.
Hart placed ninth in the shot put on Saturday, as his best mark stretched the tape to 50-7.5.
Matt Parker (Jr., Rome, N.Y.) competed in the "B" section of the men's high jump. He tied for 14th place with a 6-6.75 clearance.
The Flames will have one more opportunity to tune up for the Big South Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Liberty will travel across town next Saturday for the Lynchburg Track & Field Classic, hosted by Lynchburg College.
