Liberty senior Josh McDougal ran a 13.37.13 for 5,000 meters, late Friday evening at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif, claiming the No. 3 spot on this season's NCAA national performance list. McDougal finished 12th overall in the men's invitational 5K and fourth among collegiate runners.
Returning to the race which saw him clock a career-best 13:20.43 in 2007, McDougal (Peru, N.Y.) went through the mile mark in sixth place after splitting a 4:17. After a 4:20 second mile, the 14-time All-American had moved into third place.
McDougal then slipped to 12th during the closing laps, but was still able to easily qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championships. He trails only Eastern Kentucky's Jacob Korir and LaSalle's Sean Quigley on the national list. Korir finished fourth on Friday and Quigley was fifth. Scott Bauhs, a NCAA Division II athlete representing Chico State, took eighth place.
McDougal finished five seconds ahead of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Shadrack Songok, a two-time NCAA national champion. The Liberty senior also defeated 2004 U.S. Olympian Dan Browne, competing for Nike.
Australian professional Collis Birmingham made a powerful late surge, enabling him to win the race in 13:21.12. Ireland's Mark Carroll, who led most of the race, hung on for second place with a time of 13:28.09.
Liberty graduate assistant coach David Cheromei competed in the invitational section of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase earlier on Friday. He finished fourth in 8:37.27, after running the first mile with eventual race winner Anthony Famigletti.
McDougal's teammates will attempt to complete the Big South "Triple Crown" for the 2007-08 year on Saturday at the New Balance Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships, beginning at 10 a.m. He helped the Flames win the Big South men's cross country and indoor track & field titles earlier this season. Now, they will try to repeat as Big South outdoor track & field champions in the meet being hosted by Winthrop at Irwin Belk Track in Rock Hill, S.C. Liberty owns a 47-point lead on Coastal Carolina entering the third and final day of competition.
