Liberty Alumnus Cox Qualifies for U.S. Olympic Trials in Marathon

Josh Cox, a 1998 Liberty graduate, has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon for the third time. His winning time of 2:20:55 at Saturday's U.S. Air Force Marathon in Dayton, Ohio punched his ticket for the Trials, which will be held Nov. 3 in New York City.
Cox's course-record time left him more than 10 minutes ahead of race runner-up Chuck Engle and hit the "B" qualifying standard for the Olympic Trials. He is one of fewer than 200 runners who have recorded a qualifying time for the Trials. The top three finishers on Nov. 3 will earn a spot on the U.S. squad for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Cox made his Olympic Trials debut in 2000, at the age of 24, when he finished 18th. Four years later, Cox finished seventh at the 2004 Trials. He recorded his personal-best marathon time of 2:13:55 at the 2000 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon.
The former Flame has represented the U.S. on the international stage previously during his career. Cox qualified for the 2001 IAAF World Championships marathon in Edmonton and was the top American finisher.
At Liberty, Cox was a four-time Big South champion. He won back-to-back conference cross country crowns in 1995 and 1996. Cox was also the Big South outdoor titlist at 1,500 meters in 1997 and captured the indoor 5,000-meter conference championship the following year.
