Osborne Breaks Through for Record 16:53 5K at Duke

Liberty sophomore Ashley Osborne raced to a school-record 16:53.89 effort in the 5,000 meters at Friday's Duke ASICS Invitational in Durham, N.C. She cut over a minute off her previous best and placed eighth in the event.
Osborne (So., Bristol, Va.) owned a personal best of 17:58.12 before Friday evening's breakthrough performance. Her official time marks the fastest 5K ever run by a Liberty female athlete, either indoors or outdoors. Danielle Jordan had held the outdoor 5K mark at 17:36.68, which she ran in 2005. Carol Jefferson (Jr., Schwenksville, Pa) had been the Lady Flame closest to breaking the 17-minute barrier, posting a 17:03.23 at the ECAC Championships during the recently completed indoor season. Osborne's time was less than two seconds from the regional qualifying standard.
Jefferson was victorious in her event Friday evening, the 10,000 meters. Her 35:44.64 clocking put her over 48 seconds ahead of the rest of the field and was her second sub-36 minute effort so far this season.
Rebekah Ricksecker (So., Laurel, Del.) also took advantage of the cool conditions, recording her best-ever 1,500-meter time, 4:37.24. The effort was good for 21st place in a deep field.
