Liberty junior Josh McDougal continued his record-breaking track and field season by clocking a Liberty and Big South Conference record time of 28:27.65 for 10,000 meters, late Sunday night at Stanford's Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational.
McDougal (Peru, N.Y.) improved upon his own school and conference record, set in 2006 at Virginia's Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational, by 22 seconds and automatically qualified for the NCAA Division I national meet in the process.
The junior finished 25th in a deep Kim McDonald Memorial 10,000-meter run field which saw 15 athletes break 28 minutes. Leading the way was Oregon sophomore Galen Rupp, who set a new American collegiate record with a time of 27:33.48.
McDougal, who is currently ranked first on the NCAA Division I national performance list at both 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters, now sits eighth in the 10,000 meters after Sunday's effort.
