Time now for Today's Liberty Flames Minute! Brought to you by Select Bank for this Tuesday, February 6, 2024, I'm Nick Pierce.
College softball begins this week and the Liberty Lady Flames are ready to make another postseason run. The Lady Flames are the preseason favorites to win Conference USA and Liberty has been to three straight NCAA Regionals. Right fielder Rachel Roupe was also named preseason CUSA Player of the Year and she says the team is embracing the expectations.
"It's no surprise to me that our team is number one. We earned that. It's not a fluke. We put a lot of work in. We beat a lot of good teams and I think this year is the most talented team I've ever played on at Liberty. So, if anything, we have all respect to have that preseason number one."
Liberty opens the season in Clearwater, Fla. on Friday against St. John's and No. 15 Oregon.
To basketball, Liberty's Zach Cleveland is the Conference USA Men's Player of the Week. And, Lady Flames center Bella Smuda is the CUSA Women's Player of the Week and teammate Asia Boone is the conference Freshman of the Week.
