This is your Liberty Flames Minute! Brought to you by Select Bank for this Monday, October 9, 2023, I'm Nick Pierce,
Beginning with field hockey – where the Lady Flames knock off the No. 1 team in the nation! Sunday, in Chapel Hill, tenth-ranked Liberty edged No. 1 North Carolina, 2-1 in two overtimes. Martu Cian scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute as the Lady Flames picked up their second all-time win over a No. 1 ranked team. Liberty also beat Rutgers to advance to the NCAA Final Four two years ago.
On to football – we're just one day away from a fight for first place in Conference USA. Liberty and Jacksonville State will meet Tuesday night at 7:30 Eastern. Both teams are 3-0 in CUSA. The Flames are 5-0 overall, while the Gamecocks come in at 5-1. Whoever wins will be the first team to win it's first four CUSA games as a league member since Southern Miss did it in 1996.
