Time now for today's Liberty Flames Minute! Brought to you by Select Bank for this Monday, April 15, 2024, I'm Nick Pierce.
Beginning with baseball, Sunday – the Flames wrapped up a Conference USA series win as Liberty downed Jacksonville State, 12-6 in Lynchburg. Flames reliever Garrett McLaughlin picked up his first win, tossing the final four and a third innings.
"Every time you go out, you know, I never go in thinking I'm going one (inning) and I'm going to be done. I plan on finishing the game and if they take me out, they take me out. But that's just kind of where my mindset's been when I took on that role early on. So, coming into this wasn't that big of a deal."
McLaughlin allowed just one unearned run and struck out four.
On to softball – the Lady Flames capped a series sweep at Middle Tennessee on Sunday. In nine innings, Liberty edged MTSU, 4-3. Megan Fortner's ninth inning home run broke a 3-3- tie and put the Lady Flames in front for good. Liberty's now 15-3 in the conference and sits atop the league standings.
