This is your Liberty Flames Minute! Brought to you by Select Bank for this Friday, October 13, 2023, I'm Nick Pierce.
New conference – same expectations for the Liberty men's basketball team. Thursday, the Flames were picked as the preseason favorite to win Conference USA. Liberty received five of nine first-place votes, but Liberty and Middle Tennessee accounted for the same number of total votes, thus technically tying for the preseason top spot. Flames forward Kyle Rode was also named to the preseason all-conference team.
Meanwhile, the Lady Flames were picked second, along with Western Kentucky, in the CUSA preseason women's basketball poll. Middle Tennessee received all nine first-place votes. Liberty guard Emma Hess was named to the preseason all-conference team.
And from the scoreboard Thursday night, the Flames' men's soccer team picks up a 4-0 win on the road at Eastern Illinois. The Flames move to 3-2 in the Ohio Valley. And the Lady Flames win at home as Liberty tops Jacksonville State, 2-1. Saydie Holland put the Flames on top with a goal in the 63rd minute.
