Bierwagen Named CUSA Defensive Player of the Week

LYNCHBURG, Va. – After averaging five digs per set this past week, Liberty sophomore setter Alison Bierwagen has been named Conference USA (CUSA) Defensive Player of the Week.
A native of DeLand, Fla., Bierwagen is the first Liberty player to be named CUSA Defensive Player of the Week since Madison Blane, Nov. 4, 2024. She is the first Liberty setter all-time to be named a conference defensive player of the week.
Bierwagen helped the Lady Flames to a pair of 3-0 sweeps against North Alabama, who came into the week with a 10-1 record. She also helped Liberty average 19.17 digs per set as a team while holding an offense that hit .279 for the season to a combined .100 hitting percentage.
Despite only playing approximately half of the rotations, as Liberty deployed a two-setter system, she averaged 5.0 digs per set while adding 0.33 aces and 6.33 assists per set. She extended her double-double streak to four matches.
On Thursday, Bierwagen collected 11 digs and added 21 assists and one ace, as Liberty held UNA to a .126 hitting percentage in a 3-0 sweep.
She then collected a match-high and career-high 19 digs in a 3-0 sweep of North Alabama on Friday, as the Lions hit just .082. Bierwagen totaled 15 digs between the first two sets combined. Her 19 digs were the most digs by a Liberty setter since Amaya Williams collected 23 digs on Nov. 7, 2021 against Stetson.
The Lady Flames (8-4) carry a four-match winning streak into Conference USA play. Liberty hosts Middle Tennessee on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.) at Liberty Arena.
