"4 Downs" with Gardner-Webb

#1 Liberty and Gardner-Webb are both seeking their first victory of 2026 after each team lost a one-score game on the road last Saturday. The Flames have dropped five straight contests dating back to 2025, with all five being one-score games. Liberty earned its first-ever Big South Conference title with a 31-0 win at Gardner-Webb in the 2007 season finale.

#2 Saturday will mark the 26th all-time meeting between Liberty and Gardner-Webb, meaning the two teams have squared off in nearly half of the Flames' 54 football seasons. The two teams competed in the first 16 seasons of Big South Conference football (2002-17) together, combining for 10 league titles during that span (Liberty - 8, GWU - 2). Liberty hosted an FCS foe in each of its last two home openers, including Campbell in 2024 and Maine in 2025.

#3 Liberty held James Madison's high-powered attack to under 300 yards of total offense on Saturday (291). This week, the Flames will try to limit Gardner-Webb QB Cole Pennington, who ranks No. 3 in FCS with 345 passing yards/game. Liberty has only allowed one opposing passer to reach the 300-yard mark since the start of the 2024 season (Delaware's Nick Minicucci in 2025).

#4 Gardner-Webb is playing its fourth season of OVC football in 2026. The Runnin' Bulldogs will be Liberty's first OVC opponent since Sept. 23, 2017 at Jax State. The Flames have lost six straight meetings with OVC foes since a 42-13 win over Morehead State on Sept. 22, 1990. That marked the sixth game ever played at Williams Stadium.

A LIBERTY WIN WOULD...

Give the Flames a win in their home opener for the seventh straight year and 13th out of the last 14. It would push Liberty's record in home openers to 32-6 at the Division I level and 8-1 at the FBS level.
Make the Flames 16-9-1 all-time against Gardner-Webb, giving Liberty wins in four straight meetings and 12 out of the last 13.
Make the Flames 11-0 against FCS opponents since joining the FBS ranks in 2018.
Push the Flames' home winning streak against North Carolina opponents to 15 games.
Keep the Flames from starting a season at 0-2 for the first time since 2019.
Enable the Flames to avoid their longest losing streak (six games) since the 2005 squad dropped 10 consecutive contests to end the season.
Represent career win No. 125 for Jamey Chadwell and mark the third different team he has coached to victory over Gardner-Webb.

Home Openers
Liberty is 37-15-1 all-time in home openers, including 7-1 at the FBS level.

The Flames have won their first home game every year since the start of the 2020 season.

Liberty has posted a 21-2 record in its last 23 home openers, with the only two home-opening losses in that span coming to Norfolk State in 2012 and to No. 22 Syracuse in 2019.

FCS Success
Since joining FBS football in 2018, Liberty is 10-0 against FCS opponents. In Liberty's last six meetings with FCS foes, the Flames have outscored opponents by a combined 224-79, for an average score of 37-13.

Last year, Liberty opened the season with a 28-7 win over Maine. The Flames' closest game against an FCS opponent since 2018 came versus Saturday's foe, a 21-20 win over Gardner-Webb on Oct. 15, 2022.

Most Common Opponent
On Saturday, Gardner-Webb will overtake Charleston Southern as Liberty's most common opponent in football program history. In a series dating back to 1976, Liberty is 15-9-1 all-time against Gardner-Webb.

First-Year Coaches
Pete Bennett will serve as Gardner-Webb's interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

The Flames will face four teams with first-year head coaches this season, in JMU (Billy Napier), Gardner-Webb (Bennett), Coastal Carolina (Ryan Beard) and Missouri State (Casey Woods).

Current Liberty Head Coach Jamey Chadwell has coached against Pete Bennett once before. On Nov. 7, 2020, Chadwell's Coastal Carolina team beat South Alabama 23-6, with Bennett serving as South Alabama's wide receivers coach during that season.

Second Generation
Current Gardner-Webb starting quarterback Cole Pennington is in his first season as a Runnin' Bulldog after transferring from Marshall.

He is slated to become the second quarterback in his family to start a game against Liberty. His father, Chad Pennington, threw for 279 yards and four touchdowns in a 63-3 Marshall win over Liberty, Sept. 5, 1999 in Huntington, W.Va. Chad Pennington played for 11 seasons in the NFL, most notably with the New York Jets.
