MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - In a match decided by just two points, Liberty outlasted Coppin State, 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13) on Thursday at WVU Coliseum.
The Lady Flames extended their season-opening winning streak to four matches, while the Eagles fell to 1-3. This was the opening match of the West Virginia Invitational.

The Lady Flames will take on the host West Virginia Mountaineers tomorrow at 6 p.m. Liberty is looking for its first win over a Big 12 team in program history (at time of meeting).

Notable Numbers
- Liberty and Coppin State both hit .282 for the match. CSU led in kills (69-68) and digs (87-61), while the Lady Flames held the advantage in both aces (7-6) and blocks (12-8).
- Liberty's Paige Overcash tied for the match high with a career-high 21 kills (.436), while Jenna Otts totaled a season-high 19 kills and a career-high six blocks. Carly O'Brien posted a career-best 14 kills to go along with three aces and 12 digs. Alison Bierwagen dished out 49 assists and added 10 digs, while Shyia Richardson collected a season-high 11 digs. Laney Daniell registered seven kills and five blocks.
- Coppin State was led by Cherisse Atilano and TaKenya Stafford with 21 kills each, while Stafford also contributed 18 digs. Coco Figueroa posted a double-double with a match-high 27 digs and 11 assists, while Andrea Serrano recorded 29 assists and 16 digs. Gabriela Zuquelo sent down 11 kills.
- The two teams traded 25-22 sets back and forth, pushing the match to a fifth set.
- The Lady Flames burst out of the gates in the final set, leading 8-3 at the court switch. However, Coppin State rallied to within one point at 13-12 and again at 14-13. Liberty's Jenna Otts ended the match with a kill, 15-13.
- Liberty evened the all-time series with Coppin State at 1-1, with the Eagles winning the first meeting, 3-1, on Sept. 17, 2022.
- Overcash is the first Lady Flame to score 20 or more kills since Kate Gammer sent down 22 kills against Sam Houston, Nov. 1, 2024.
- Tonight marked the first time that two Liberty players recorded 15 or more kills in the same match since Oct. 5, 2024, when Kamryn Bacus had 19 kills and Kate Gammer 16 against Jacksonville State.
- Bierwagen's 49 assists were the most by a Liberty freshman since Amaya Williams' 50 assists at UNC Asheville on Nov. 9, 2017.
- O'Brien recorded a double-double for the second match in a row, while Bierwagen posted her first career double-double.
- The last time Liberty opened a season with a 4-0 record was 2023, when the Lady Flames went 8-0 to begin the campaign.
