
Lady Flames Down ECU, William & Mary to Claim Tribe Invite

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Liberty claimed victory over both East Carolina (25-11, 33-35, 25-23, 22-25, 16-14) and William & Mary (25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 25-9) on Saturday at Kaplan Arena, wrapping up a perfect 3-0 weekend at the Tribe Invitational.
The Lady Flames improved to 8-1 on the season, while the Pirates (7-1) sustained their first loss of the campaign. William & Mary falls to 4-4.
Liberty's Paige Overcash and Carly O'Brien were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Liberty vs. East Carolina
The Lady Flames will compete in their first home match of the season on Monday at 6 p.m., welcoming Radford to Liberty Arena.
The Lady Flames improved to 8-1 on the season, while the Pirates (7-1) sustained their first loss of the campaign. William & Mary falls to 4-4.
Liberty's Paige Overcash and Carly O'Brien were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Liberty vs. East Carolina
- ECU led set five 13-10 and had two match-point tries at 14-12. However, Paige Overcash scored three straight kills for Liberty and Carly O'Brien's 19th kill of the match clinched the 3-2 match victory for Liberty.
- Liberty outhit ECU .298-.192 for the match. Liberty led in kills (78-58) and digs (82-70), while the Pirates held the advance in blocks (9-8) and both teams recorded 12 aces.
- Paige Overcash posted career highs in both kills (30) and digs (10) for her first career double-double, while Carly O'Brien scored a career-high 19 kills to go along with four aces and a career-best 22 digs. Alison Bierwagen dished out a career-high 65 assists while adding four aces and 14 digs. Shyia Richardson collected 16 digs, while Aubrey Acheson totaled 12 digs. Laney Daniell contributed seven kills and six blocks.
- ECU had four players reach double-figures in kills, in Kai Bailey (13), Aulie Huff (12), Sydney Buchanan (11) and Ellie Pate (10). Taryn Gilreath dished out 52 assists, while Carlia Northcross posted six blocks and Brooklyn Allison collected 23 digs.
- Set two between Liberty and ECU was the longest set for the Lady Flames since falling 38-36 to Kennesaw State in set one on Nov. 17, 2019.
- Bierwagen's 65 assists were the most by a Liberty player since Kallie Corbin recorded 66 assists at Presbyterian College on Nov. 2, 2007.
- Overcash became just the second Lady Flame with 30 or more kills in a match in the rally-scoring era (since 2001) and first since Rachel Harnack scored 40 kills at Coastal Carolina on Nov. 10, 2001.
- Liberty's 78 kills since posting 80 kills at Presbyterian on Nov. 2, 2007.
- Liberty leads ECU 5-0 in the all-time series.
- The Lady Flames and Tribe traded set victories in the first two sets, but Liberty pulled away in sets three and four.
- Liberty outhit William & Mary .323-.203 for the match, with the Lady Flames leading in kills (54-49), digs (60-59) and blocks (7-5). The Tribe held a 7-3 advantage in aces.
- Overcash led all players with 17 kills to go along with four blocks, while Jenna Otts scored 14 kills. Alison Bierwagen posted her sixth straight double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs. Aubrey Acheson collected 13 digs, while Layla Collins hit .545 with six kills. Shyia Richardson collected 11 digs.
- For William & Mary, Audrey Brcka scored 14 kills and Nicole Smith tallied 12 kills. Avery Horejsi collected a match-high 29 digs.
- William & Mary leads the all-time series with Liberty, 11-5.
- Liberty is 3-0 in five-set matches this season.
- Bierwagen is the first Liberty player since Jennifer Belk (7 in 2004) with six or more consecutive double-doubles.
- The Lady Flames have won two invitationals (Buffalo and William & Mary) this season and is off to its best start since opening the 2023 season at 8-1.
