Brylan Green, a four-year veteran for the Flames, has been recognized as one of the top defensive backs in the country entering the 2025 season.
    Â
Today, Green was named to the 2025 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List. The list includes 35 of the nation's best defensive backs, representing nine different FBS conferences and one independent program.
    Â
Green was one of three Conference USA players to make the preseason watch list. He is joined on the list by Kennesaw State cornerbacks JeRico Washington, Jr. and A'Marion McCoy. Green was also one of 12 Group of Five players named to the watch list.
    Â
The native of Opelousas, La., has already received several other preseason accolades. He has been named a first-team selection as a safety to the 2025 Phil Steele and 2025 Athlon Sports Preseason All-Conference teams.
    Â
Earlier this week, the safety was named to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 listing, recognizing him as one of the top draft-eligible players in the country.
    Â
In 2024, Green finished the year with 32 tackles (21 solo, 11 assisted) and he ranked fifth on the team in defensive snaps played (489). He was a CUSA Second-Team All-Conference honoree and named to the VaSID Second-Team All-State team.
    Â
In 2023, the safety was named a FWAA All-America second-team honoree after ranking No. 6 nationally in interceptions (5). As a team, Liberty finished the season ranked No. 1 in the country in total interceptions (21) during the Flames' run to a CUSA Football Championship and an appearance in the Fiesta Bowl.
    Â
The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award is awarded to the best defensive back in college football based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character.
    Â
The award was established in 1986 and is named after history's greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe. Thorpe excelled as a running back, passer and kicker on the offensive side of the ball, but also stood out as a defensive back.
    Â
In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon. The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award is universally accepted as one of the nation's top collegiate sports honors.
    Â
The watch list will be narrowed down to a field of 15 semifinalists by October 28 and three finalists by November 25.
    Â
The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award winner will be announced on the ESPN live presentation of The Home Depot College Football Awards at 7 p.m. ET.
