LYNCHBURG, Va. – For the second straight year, Liberty Athletics has earned the Conference USA Institutional Excellence Award. The award is given to the institution with the highest GPA during each academic year for all student-athletes in conference-sponsored sports.
Liberty Athletics ended the 2024-25 school year with a 3.40 cumulative GPA, the highest mark among all CUSA schools and best year-end mark in athletics department history. Additionally, Liberty led the league with four Sport Academic Awards, recognizing the highest team cumulative GPAs for their respective sports.
The four Liberty teams to earn Sport Academic Awards are women's track & field, men's cross country, men's track & field and men's basketball. The women's track & field squad captured both the CUSA indoor and outdoor titles during the 2024-25 academic year. The Flames men's cross country team claimed its first CUSA title, while Liberty men's basketball won both the CUSA regular season and tournament crowns. Liberty won 11 total CUSA titles (seven championship crowns, four regular season titles) in its second year in Conference USA and has claimed 21 total CUSA titles in those two years.
All 20 of Liberty's teams earned a 3.0 or higher GPA for both the fall and spring semesters as well as for the 2024-25 academic year and cumulatively. This is the second straight year all 20 teams had a 3.0 or higher GPA for a school year after the feat had never been achieved prior to last year. This is also the second straight semester that all 20 Liberty Athletics squads have had a cumulative GPA or 3.0 or higher.
Overall, the cumulative GPA for Liberty's 575-plus student-athletes has risen in 15 out of the last 17 semesters. Individually, a total of 125 student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA during the spring 2025 semester, while 55 ended the 2024-25 academic year with an unblemished 4.0 cumulative GPA.
At the conclusion of the spring 2025 semester, 454 student-athletes are maintaining a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA (77 percent).
Working behind the scenes to equip Liberty's student-athletes with all the necessary tools to excel in the classroom is Liberty's Academic Affairs for Athletics staff. This group of dedicated individuals spends countless hours each week working alongside Liberty's 575-plus student-athletes. Their staff continues to help Liberty student-athletes thrive in their pursuit of academic, athletic, social and spiritual development.
