LYNCHBURG, Va. – Thanks to their performances at Friday's adidas XC Challenge, a trio of Liberty cross country runners swept the CUSA weekly awards on Tuesday. Nicholas Kiprotich (Male Athlete of the Week) and Edwin Kiprop (Male Freshman of the Week) claimed the men's honors, while Allie Zealand was tabbed both Female Athlete and Freshman of the Week.
A senior from Eldoret, Kenya, Kiprotich collected his second CUSA Male Athlete of the Week award this season and the third of his career. He led the Flames to the adidas XC Challenge men's team title, finishing a team-best sixth place among the 168-runner field. Kiprotich covered the 6K course in 17:57.7.
Making his collegiate cross country debut, Kiprop finished right behind Kiprotich in seventh place, clocking 17:59.7. The native of Kapsabet, Kenya was the top freshman finisher in Friday's race.
Zealand, who hails from Forest, Va., paced the Lady Flames to a third-place team showing by coming in seventh of 163 (second among freshmen) in the women's 5K. The now two-time CUSA Female Freshman of the Week crossed the finish line in 16:59.4. She joins Calli Doan, Ava Gordon, Kayla Werner and Adelyn Fairley as the only Lady Flames ever to clock a sub-17:00 5K in cross country.
The team will split up between two competitions the first weekend of October, including the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational (Oct. 4 in South Bend, Ind.) and the Paul Short Run (Oct. 5 in Bethlehem, Pa.)
