Liberty Track Places 6 on CUSA All-Academic Team

LYNCHBURG, Va. – A conference-high six Liberty student-athletes were named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team for men's and women's track & field on Monday. Liberty's honorees for the award which spans both the indoor and outdoor seasons included Hunter Flack, John Hicks, Ethan Mylin, Ben Shughart, Calli Doan and Katrina Schlenker.
A health and physical education major with a 3.85 GPA, Flack placed third in the men's pole vault at the CUSA Indoor Track & Field Championships and took fifth place at the CUSA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The native of Green Lane, Pa., pushed his pole vault personal best to 16-0.75 at the Florida Relays.
Hicks graduated with an MBA earlier this month, maintaining a 3.60 graduate GPA. A native of Romney, W.Va., Hicks claimed CUSA titles in the indoor men's weight throw (program-record 68-4.5) and outdoor men's hammer this year. He then qualified for his first NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships appearance with a personal-best 220-7 hammer effort at the NCAA Division I East First Rounds meet.
Mylin, a mechanical engineering major with a 3.74 GPA, saw his junior season cut short due to injury. The Lancaster, Pa., native's top mark of the year was a 199-8 effort at the Florida Relays. That ranked No. 3 in CUSA for the season.
A native of Shippensburg, Pa., Shughart graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in sport management with a 4.0 GPA. He won the CUSA men's javelin title by 40 feet and then qualified for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the event for the first time.
A two-time All-American and a two-time CSC Academic All-American, Doan owns a 4.0 GPA as she works toward a Ph.D. in health sciences. The Apex, N.C., native will compete in the women's steeplechase at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the second year in a row, later this week. Earlier this season, Doan became the first woman since 2008 to sweep the CUSA steeplechase and 5K titles and clocked the fastest steeplechase time by a CUSA runner in 15 years, 10:03.25.
A commercial aeronautics major from Batavia, Ill., Schlenker owns a 3.92 cumulative GPA. She was the CUSA women's steeplechase runner-up in just her second time contesting the event, clocking an 11:09.32. During the indoor season, Schlenker took seventh place in the CUSA women's 800 final.
These six honorees helped Liberty sweep the men's and women's team titles at both the CUSA Indoor Track & Field Championships and CUSA Outdoor Track & Field Championships during its first year as a conference member.
