NASSAU, Bahamas – Liberty's Reese Webster helped her Trinidad and Tobago women's 4 x 100 relay squad successfully qualify to this summer's Paris Olympics during Sunday's World Athletics Relays at Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas.
Webster ran the second leg for Trinidad and Tobago's squad, which clocked 43.54 to claim the second and final automatic Olympics qualifying berth from its heat. The first-year Lady Flame was joined on the successful squad by Taejha Badal, Reyare Thomas and Leah Bertrand.
The Trinidad and Tobago women's 4 x 100 relay will compete in its sixth consecutive Olympics at Stade de France with the prelims slated for Aug. 8 and the final for Aug. 9.
Other nations to successfully punch tickets to Paris in the women's 4 x 100 relay this weekend included Australia, Canada, Cote d'Ivoire, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Jamaica Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Switzerland and the United States.
Liberty's Omari Lewis and his Trinidad and Tobago men's 4 x 100 relay squad was not as fortunate Sunday evening, as it was unable to get the baton all the way around the track successfully during its second chance at Paris qualification.
In Saturday's opening round, Lewis ran a blazing anchor leg as Trinidad and Tobago posted a season-best time of 38.46 for third place in its heat. That left them as the fastest non-Olympic qualifier from Saturday's men's 4 x 100 races.
The Trinidad and Tobago men's 4 x 100 relay team will now hope to nab one of the two at-large qualifiers which will join the 14 nations which successfully advanced from this weekend's meet to Paris.
Former Liberty All-American Alejandro Perlaza Zapata's bid for a third consecutive Olympics appearance is in jeopardy after his Colombia mixed 4 x 400 relay squad was unable to advance.
With Perlaza Zapata leading off, Colombia finished sixth in its heat and 27th overall in Saturday's opening round with a time of 3:21.07.
Colombia moved Perlaza Zapata to the third leg on Sunday, but it ended up seventh in its heat and 19th overall with a 3:21.29 clocking.
Webster will not get to celebrate for long, as she and Lewis will now prepare for Liberty's inaugural appearance at the CUSA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The meet is slated for Friday through Sunday at Kidd Field in El Paso, Texas.
