AZUSA, Calif. – Calli Doan (4:21.34) and Kyle Harkabus (3:47.00) posted CUSA's fastest 1,500 times thus far in 2024 late Saturday night, closing out Liberty's fruitful visit to the Bryan Clay Invitational.
Women's Day 3 Recap
Doan's season-best 4:21.34 edged out CUSA indoor mile champion Valerie Lastra of FIU (4:21.35) for the conference lead. It also marked a significant improvement upon Doan's season-opening 4:30.05 clocking at the Raleigh Relays from March 29.
On Thursday, Doan had run 10:03.90 for her first steeplechase since earning second team All-America honors in 2023. That time ranks No. 12 nationally and is the fastest by a CUSA runner in 15 years.
New Liberty women's 800 record holder (2:04.46) Katelyn Locker lopped nearly three seconds off her lifetime best in the 1,500 on Saturday. Locker's 4:23.15 effort won her heat by 2.8 seconds and ranked third of 190 finishers in the Open A grouping of the 1,500.
Locker now sits No. 4 on the Lady Flames' all-time 1,500 chart, making her one of four current Lady Flames who rank among the top nine of that list. Doan, Adelyn Fairley and Jessica Palisca are the others.
Freshman Ryann Aycock continued her impressive progression in the 1,500 with a big personal-best time of 4:33.92. She has now improved from 4:44.21 to 4:39.15 to 4:33.92 the three times she has run the "metric mile" this season.
Liberty's final runner to circle the Cougar Stadium track this week, Katrina Schlenker began her 1,500 race at 11 p.m. Pacific. The sophomore placed a close second in the race in 4:33.41, setting a new personal best by 4.5 seconds.
Men's Day 3 Recap
24 hours after joining the 5K's sub-14:00 club for the first time at 13:58.38, Harkabus lowered his own CUSA-best 1,500 effort from 3:48.40 to 3:47.00. This is the second straight year Harkabus has performed well in the Bryan Clay Invitational 1,500. His time of 3:44.02 from a year ago still stands as his personal best.
