LYNCHBURG, Va. – New Liberty men's weight throw record holder Desmond Coleman has been named Conference USA Male Field Athlete of the Week for the first time.
Liberty has now claimed this award for five consecutive weeks. The Flames' previous CUSA Male Field Athlete of the Weeks honorees included Warren Barrett (Jan. 16), Cole Peterlin (Jan. 23), Barrett for a second time (Jan. 30) and John Hicks (Feb. 6).
A redshirt sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., Coleman saved his best throw for last during Friday's men's weight throw competition at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational. His 68-0.5 effort in round six leapfrogged him from fifth place to first in the final standings, and broke the program record by 11 inches. John Hicks had set the previous standard of 67-1.25 just six days earlier at the Liberty Open.
Coleman currently ranks No. 1 in CUSA and No. 47 in the NCAA during his first season competing in the weight throw. He has won three of his six competitions and has never finished lower than third.
Tristian Merchant will make his indoor track & field season debut Saturday at the Virginia Tech Challenge, competing in the men's 3K at 3:05 p.m.
Coleman and the rest of the Flames will return to action at the CUSA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The meet will take place Feb. 23 & 24 at the Brant Tolsma Indoor Track at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.
