
1st Teamers Cartwright, Engle Headline Lady Flames’ VaSID All-State Honorees

Liberty's duo of Indea Cartwright (hurdles) and Meredith Engle (multis) headlined the Lady Flames' seven Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division Women's Indoor Track & Field All-State honorees on Thursday.
Liberty's second-team performers included Patasha Bryan (multis), Paola Bueno (throws), Calli Doan (distance), Makenzy Mizera (jumps) and Jasmine Williams (hurdles).
These award winners helped Liberty make it back-to-back team titles at the ASUN Indoor Track & Field Championships in February.

Indea Cartwright (1st Team – Hurdles) – First-year Lady Flame Cartwright made an amazing first impression, breaking the Liberty and ASUN women's 60 hurdles records with her winning time of 8.23 on Dec. 2. That mark earned her ASUN Women's Track Athlete of the Week honors on Dec. 7 and ranked No. 45 nationally for the year. Cartwright was the ASUN 60 hurdles runner-up (8.34) and placed fifth in the 200 (season-best 24.63).
Meredith Engle (1st Team – Multis) – Engle is a first team all-state honoree for the first time after collecting second team honors in both 2021 and 2022. She was voted ASUN Women's Most Outstanding Field Performer for the second year in a row after scoring 17.5 points. Engle completed eight events at the two-day meet, defending her pentathlon title (personal-best 3,973), placing fourth in the triple jump (personal-best 38-11.5), tying for sixth in the high jump (5-4.25) and coming in 10th in the shot put (39-7).
Patasha Bryan (2nd Team – Multis) – Like Engle, Bryan kept busy at the ASUN meet, finishing third in the pentathlon (3,721) and 4 x 400 relay (3:48.57), tying for sixth in the high jump (5-4.25) and coming in 11th in the shot put (39-4.5). Her pentathlon score of 3,865 at the Brant Tolsma Invitational set a Liberty freshman record and ranks No. 4 in program history.
Paola Bueno (2nd Team – Throws) – Bueno capped off her season by throwing 64-8 to become the first freshman to capture the ASUN women's weight throw title since 2006. Her mark of 65-2.75 at the Bob Pollock Invitational set a Liberty freshman record and sits No. 4 on Liberty's all-time list. Bueno collected a pair of ASUN Women's Freshman of the Week honors (Jan. 18 and Feb. 1).
Calli Doan (2nd Team – Distance) – Doan was recognized as ASUN Most Valuable Female Performer and Women's Most Outstanding Track Performer after scoring a meet-high 28 points. She won both the 3K (meet and Liberty-record 9:24.67) and 5K (16:35.87) while placing second in the mile. (4:43.28). Her 3K title clinched the team championship for the Lady Flames. She clocked a 4:36.52 mile at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 10, breaking the program record which had stood since 2002.
Makenzy Mizera (2nd Team – Jumps) – Mizera reached a season-best 41-5.25 to win the ASUN women's triple jump title. This came one week after she had jumped 41-4.5 to take fourth place at the USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships. She garnered a pair of ASUN Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors (Feb. 1 & 22).
Jasmine Williams (2nd Team – Hurdles) – During her first year at Liberty, Williams posted a trio of top-five ASUN finishes. She helped the Lady Flames come in third in the 4 x 400 relay (3:48.57) after taking fourth in the 60 hurdles (8.45) and fifth in the 400 (56.85). Williams twice clocked a personal-best 60 hurdles time of 8.29. That ranks No. 2 in program history and No. 3 all-time in ASUN Conference annals.
