The Flames earned their first-ever SEC win over Mississippi State, an 80-76 triumph in the 2019 NCAA Tournament Round of 64. The win was Liberty's first ever in the NCAA Tournament. The Flames have two wins over Mississippi State and one each over Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Missouri.

- Liberty is No. 50 in the NCAA Men's Basketball NET Rankings. The Flames are also No. 57 in the KenPom out of 362 Division I teams. Alabama is No. 9 in the NET and No. 8 in the KenPom rankings.
- Flames guard Colin Porter leads CUSA in assist/turnover ratio (3.43), ranking 17th nationally in the category.

3/22/19 - NCAA Tournament Round of 64 vs. No. 5 seed Mississippi State, W 80-76 - The event was created to honor C.M. Newton and the legacy he left. Newton coached at Alabama, Transylvania and Vanderbilt and was the first coach in the SEC to put forward an all-African American starting five while integrating the men's basketball team at Alabama. The game honors his commitment to diversity and inclusions and honors local organizations that are creating a similar impact in the Birmingham community.
