
Hicks Opens Virginia Challenge with 4th-Place Hammer Finish

John Hicks got Liberty off to a strong start on the opening day of the Virginia Challenge, Thursday at Lannigan Field. He placed fourth in the men’s hammer, marking the best of the Flames’ two top-10 finishes on the day.
The reigning ASUN Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, Hicks reached 214-11 in round three. The second-longest throw of his career was good for fourth place among 22 men’s hammer throwers.
Grace Artis paced the Lady Flames in the women’s hammer, coming in ninth of 29 competitors with a mark of 186-4. That effort represented the fourth-longest throw of her career.
ASUN Women’s Field Athlete of the Week Naomi Mojica was also in action Thursday. She reached 179-6 for 15th place in the women’s hammer.

The Virginia Challenge will resume Friday at 9 a.m. with the women’s javelin beginning a full day of action at Lannigan Field.
