Shot Putters Stand Out on VertKlasse Day 1

Liberty’s Kyle Mitchell (season-best 60-1.75) and Naomi Mojica (season-best 51-3.5) swept the elite sections of the shot put on the opening day of the VertKlasse Meeting, Friday at High Point’s Vert Stadium.
Mitchell led four Flames among the top five men’s shot putters. He was followed by Kevin Nedrick (second, 59-0.25), Warren Barrett (fourth, season-best 57-6.5) and Jose Ballivian (fifth, 55-11.25) atop the final standings.
Mojica dominated the women’s event, with her season-best and ASUN-leading 51-3.5 effort winning by more than four feet. Teammate Megan Mann’s personal-best 46-8 effort was good for fourth place in the competition and fifth all-time at Liberty.
Continuing a strong day for Liberty’s throwers, Mackenzie Hainley was the women’s javelin runner-up (141-9), while the Flames’ duo of Jacob Strickler (third place, 191-9) and Ethan Mylin (fifth, personal-best 185-2) both ended up inside the men’s javelin top five.
Sam Mastro made it 10 Liberty top-five showings in the throws, heaving the men’s hammer 183-5 for fifth place in the elite section.
Four Flames distance runners placed inside the top five of their events, topped by third-place finishes from freshman Isaiah Schulties (men’s 1,500 – 3:55.18) and Chelsea Stocki (women’s steeplechase – 11:14.66). Stocki’s time ranks No. 8 in program history.
Kyley Sorg (outdoor personal-best 18:06.81) crossed the line fourth in the women’s 5K, while Jeremiah Mussmon (15:06.31) was fourth in the men’s 5K.
On a windy afternoon, Anthony Bryan matched his personal best of 15-1 to tie for second place in Group B of the men’s pole vault.
