Four Flames who broke records during the past week earned ASUN Conference track & field weekly honors on Thursday. Liberty's honorees include Kyle Mitchell (Men's Field Athlete of the Week), Quinten Clay (Men's Freshman of the Week), Calli Doan (Women's Track Athlete of the Week) and Chelsea Igberaese (Women's Field Athlete of the Week).
A junior from Kingston, Jamaica, Mitchell earns his second award of the 2021 outdoor season and the seventh ASUN weekly honor of his career. He began his week by winning the men's shot put (program-record 64-3) and placing eighth in the discus (156-1), last Thursday at the UNF Invitational. Mitchell broke his own shot put program record four times during the competition, climbing to No. 14 nationally in the event.
Yesterday, Mitchell won the Liberty Twilight Qualifier men's shot put (facility record 64-1.75) and placed fourth in the discus (personal-best 167-8). His winning shot put mark shattered the previous facility standard of 60-6 which had stood for eight years.
A native of Portsmouth, Va., Clay gives the Flames the ASUN Men's Freshman of the Week honor for the eighth consecutive week. It is the second honor for Clay, who was previously recognized on April 14. He won the men's long jump (Liberty freshman-record 24-11) and tied for second in the men's high jump (6-8) at Saturday's Virginia Grand Prix. Clay's record-breaking long jump was the best mark by a Flame since 2005, punched his NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round ticket and ranks No. 51 nationally this season.
A sophomore from Apex, N.C., Doan picks up her first career ASUN track & field weekly honor. She won the women's steeplechase at the Virginia Grand Prix with a time of 10:10.23 that took down her own program record by 15 seconds and ranks No. 41 nationally. At last night's Liberty Twilight Qualifier, Doan came in fifth in the women's 1,500 with a personal-best 4:22.72 clocking. That ranks No. 3 in program history and is the fastest time by a Lady Flame since 2002.
A junior from Dacula, Ga., Igberaese collects her seventh ASUN weekly honor of 2021 and the eighth of her career. She recorded a trio of top-10 finishes at the UNF Invitational, coming in sixth in the women's discus (172-3), ninth in the shot put (48-10.25) and ninth in the hammer (168-4).
Igberaese then won both of her events at yesterday's Liberty Twilight Qualifier, including the women's discus (season-best 178-0) and hammer (ASUN all-time record 204-10). Igberaese, who broke the ASUN women's hammer record for the third time this season, now ranks No. 39 nationally in the discus and No. 42 in the hammer.
Liberty will be back in action May 14 and 15, when the Flames and Lady Flames compete in the 2021 ASUN Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The meet will take place at Visit Jax Track at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., as Liberty attempts to defend its men's and women's team titles from 2019.
