Four Liberty athletes earned ASUN Conference track & field weekly awards on Wednesday, including Kyle Mitchell (Men's Field Athlete of the Week), Felix Lawrence (Men's Freshman of the Week), Chelsea Igberaese (Women's Field Athlete of the Week) and Adelyn Ackley (Women's Freshman of the Week).
A junior from Kingston, Jamaica, Mitchell collects his first award of the 2021 outdoor season and the sixth ASUN weekly honor of his career. He placed third in the men's shot put at the Virginia Challenge with a mark of 62-11.25 which shattered his own program record by a foot. All three of his legal throws on Saturday landed past the previous record of 61-11.5. Mitchell currently ranks No. 18 nationally in the event.
Lawrence, who hails from Portsmouth, Dominica, is now a two-time ASUN Men's Freshman of the Week for his career. He was previously honored on Feb. 19, 2020 during his freshman indoor track & field season. Lawrence came in third in the Virginia Challenge men's 400 hurdles with a personal-best time of 52.11, the fastest clocking by an ASUN men's 400 hurdler since 2018. Saturday's effort ranks No. 8 in program history and No. 53 nationally this season, including No. 11 among freshmen.
Igberaese, a junior from Dacula, Ga., is no stranger to winning ASUN weekly awards. Today's honor is her sixth of 2021 and the seventh of her career. Igberaese performed well in all three of her events at the Virginia Challenge, winning the women's discus (season-best 175-5), coming in sixth in the hammer (personal-best 203-1) and placing seventh in the shot put (season-best 49-5.5). Her hammer effort set an ASUN all-time record and ranks No. 2 all-time for the Lady Flames. Igberaese currently ranks No. 37 nationally in the discus and No. 38 in the hammer.
Ackley is now a six-time ASUN Women's Freshman of the Week for her career. This is her first outdoor award, but the Mears, Mich., native previously captured four honors for cross country and one for indoor track & field. Her personal-best 5K clocking of 16:10.19 at the Virginia Challenge on Friday broke the ASUN all-time record that had stood since 2004. It also took down the Liberty freshman record and ranks No. 2 in program history. Ackley currently sits No. 54 nationally for the women's 5K, including No. 12 among freshmen.
Liberty will return to Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C., for the second time in three weeks with the Aggie Classic slated for Saturday.
