
Witmer Wins 400 Hurdles Title at Coastal

Mary Witmer opened her junior season with a victory in the women's 400-meter hurdles, highlighting Liberty's Saturday performances at the Coastal Carolina Invitational, at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Witmer, who clocked a school-record women's 400 hurdles time of 59.92 a year ago, won the event by a second on Saturday with a 1:02.12 clocking.
Redshirt senior David Scouten was the Flames' next highest finisher on Saturday. The 2014 Big South men's discus champion placed third in the event with a 159-10 heave.
In the women's discus, sophomore Holly Arey set a pair of personal bests while finishing fifth. Entering the meet with a personal-best mark of 135-1, Arey reached 142-6 on her first throw and later improved to 142-9 in round five. Arey now ranks No. 6 on Liberty's all-time women's discus chart.
Christieanna Apon (sixth in the women's 800, 2:18.85) and Robert Detz (eighth in the men's shot put, 48-10.75) were Liberty's final two top-10 finishers on the day. Detz also threw the discus 135-11 for 15th place in the freshman's Flames debut.
Heptathletes Riley Brandon and Jessica Harrison each competed in a pair of Saturday events. Brandon came in 11th in the women's 800 at 2:22.99 and 20th in the shot put with a mark of 35-1.75.
Harrison clocked an outdoor personal-best 800 time of 2:25.89 for 17th place, while throwing the shot put 35-3 for the 19th position.
Liberty will train in Myrtle Beach this week, in preparation for the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational. The three-day meet will begin Thursday at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
