Liberty men's basketball senior forward Andrew Smith could have a chance to showcase his gravity-defying abilities on a national stage. The 6-9 human highlight reel was selected to participate in the Dark Horse Dunker competition for a chance to earn the final spot in the dunk contest portion of the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships.
Smith and 15 other college basketball dunkers will now square off in a bracket-style fan voting competition to become the country's most electric "Dark Horse Dunker" – an unknown, under-the-radar player with hops and creativity that belongs on the national stage.
Beginning on Feb. 11, fans will have the opportunity to vote for Smith in his first round matchup on DarkHorseDunker.com. Fans will be prompted to sign in via Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or provide their email address to vote. Each individual user can vote once per day, per platform.
First round voting will begin at 1 p.m. EST on Feb. 11 and end at 1 p.m. EST on Feb. 18. The player receiving the most votes in each individual matchup will advance to the next round. Voting will continue over the course of four weeks until a Dark Horse Dunker is crowned. The winner will compete LIVE on ESPN in the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, held April 2 on Final Four weekend in Indianapolis.
Known for his high-flying abilities and thunderous dunks, Smith has been featured on ESPN's Sports Center Top 10 on multiple occasions. Be sure to #VoteforSmith beginning on Feb. 11. In the meantime, check out Smith's Dark Horse Dunker entry video.
