On the heels of Liberty's successful showing at the 2012 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Flames Sports Network's Nick Pierce caught up with Liberty Head Men's and Women's Track & Field Coach Brant Tolsma.
The Liberty men's squad won its sixth consecutive Big South outdoor team title, aided by Big South Men's Most Outstanding Field Performer Ryan Smith and Men's Freshman of the Year Kyle Wheeler. Additionally, Tolsma captured the 50th Big South Coach of the Year trophy of his 26-year coaching career at Liberty.
Meanwhile, the Lady Flames placed second to host Coastal Carolina. Liberty won eight women's event titles, including a pair by Mychelle Cumings, who shared the Big South Women's Freshman of the Year honor.
Liberty is dividing its athletes between a pair of meets this weekend. A group of Flames and Lady Flames are competing at the Penn Relays, which run today through Saturday in Philadelphia, Pa. Some of their teammates will take part in Radford's Highlander Invitational, Friday and Saturday.
