Liberty right-hander John Niggli has been named the Big South Pitcher of the Week for games played the opening weekend of the 2012 season.
Niggli set the tone for the weekend for the Flames' hurlers, opening Liberty's season by shutting down the Richmond Spiders, 12-0, Friday. The right-hander pitched the first six innings of Liberty's 23 consecutive scoreless innings to begin 2012 and held the Spiders to a .174 batting average. He did not allow a base runner past first base until the seventh inning.
The Tulare, Calif., native pitched six-plus innings, scattering four hits during his first outing of 2012. He struck out four batters and walked two.
