Liberty redshirt senior Elliot Galeone finished third in a star-studded men's javelin field, highlighting the Flames' Friday at the 102nd Drake Relays.
Despite the unfavorable headwinds at Drake Stadium, Galeone uncorked a fourth throw of 227-5. That placed him directly ahead of Iowa's Matt Byers (currently ranked No. 6 nationally) and Georgia's Brian Moore (currently ranked No. 7 nationally) in the final standings. The duo placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
The only javelin throwers to defeat Galeone were NCAA No. 1-ranked Ignacio Guerra of Western Kentucky (246-5) and NCAA No. 5-ranked Tim Glover of Illinois State (241-8).
Ryan Smith also competed at the site of the 2011 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday, coming in 14th in the men's shot put. His top throw reached 53-11.25.
A number of Liberty athletes will compete at the Radford Invitational, which resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with a quartet of field events. Action on the track will begin at noon.
