6/2/2009 12:00:00 AM | Track and Field
Liberty redshirt senior Daniel Newell and freshman John Talbert will both make their initial NCAA national meet appearances at next week's NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, it was announced today. The duo will join Sam Chelanga and Matt Parker, giving the Flames four representatives in Fayetteville, Ark.
Newell (Roanoke, Va.), the Big South and IC4A decathlon champion, was the final decathlete invited to the national meet off of the provisional qualification list. His score of 7,255 points, achieved at the Big South Championship, ranks No. 26 on the list of NCAA decathlon qualifiers. Newell continues Liberty's rich tradition in the multi event, as he will be the program's ninth decathlete to compete at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the last 21 years.
Talbert (Newton, Kan.) was an at-large selection to the national meet, after finishing sixth in the discus at the NCAA Division I East Regional Track & Field Championships. The Big South Men's Freshman of the Year ranks No. 13 in the NCAA discus field, with his season-best throw of 191-9. Talbert is the first Liberty freshman to qualify for the NCAA national meet since Brandon Hoskins and Josh McDougal in 2005.
Four-time All-American Chelanga (R-So., Nairobi, Kenya) automatically qualified for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the men's 10K with his collegiate-record 27:28.48 clocking on April 24. Meanwhile, Parker (Sr., Rome, N.Y.) punched his national meet ticket with a fourth-place finish in the high jump at the NCAA Division I East Regional Track & Field Championships.
Liberty's quartet of men's qualifiers equals the most in program history. The Flames also sent four men's athletes to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 1999, 2007 and 2008.
Newell will be the first Flame to compete at the four-day meet, which will be held at Arkansas' John McDonnell Field, June 10-13. The decathlon is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. Eastern on June 10.
