Liberty freshman Alyssa Pegues captured third place in the women's triple jump, Friday evening at the Chick-fil-A UNC Elite Meet in Chapel Hill, N.C. Her effort highlighted Liberty's performances at Belk Track/Fetzer Field, in the team's final tune-up for the IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Pegues (Warner Robins, Ga.), an All-Big South triple jumper, reached out to 38-11 on her best attempt Friday evening. The measurement was less than an inch shy of her career best leap.
Fellow freshman Cody Fridgen (Sarasota, Fla.) closed out his rookie season with his second consecutive pole vault clearance over the 15-foot mark. Fridgen, who finished third at the Big South meet earlier this spring, topped out at 15-1 to place 15th in a deep and competitive field of men's vaulters.
Liberty assistant coach Clendon Henderson also competed in Friday's meet, winning the men's discus competition. His season-best 196-2 heave topped his closest competitor by more than 27 feet. Henderson is currently ranked No. 9 among American discus throwers and has exceeded the qualifying standard for the 2009 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for June 25-28 in Eugene, Ore.
Princeton, N.J., will be Liberty's next destination, as the Flames and Lady Flames prepare for the IC4A/ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The meet will be held May 15-17 at Weaver Track & Field Stadium. Liberty's men's squad, ranked No. 22 nationally, will attempt to claim its third consecutive IC4A championship.
