Liberty sophomore Krystle Matthews sits atop the heptathlon standings by 89 points after the first day of competition at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational, on a blustery Friday afternoon at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex.
The decathlon also got underway Friday afternoon, and a pair of Flames rank among the top five out of 15 entrants who completed all five events. Clarence Murray (R-Sr., Birdsboro, Pa.) is listed fourth, while Geren Woodbridge (R-So., Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) is right behind him in fifth. Both athletes could qualify for the IC4A Championships with solid efforts on Saturday.
Matthews (Chesapeake, Va.) was a consistent performer on Friday, after opening the meet with the second-fastest 100-meter hurdles time (14.94) among the heptathletes. She then went on to place third in both the shot put (31-9.5) and 200-meter dash (26.02), on her way to a first-day score of 2,720. Matthews' times in both the 100 hurdles and 200 dash, both aided by gusty tailwinds, established new personal bests.
Like her classmate, Jennifer Healey (Virginia Beach, Va.) was able to set new personal bests in both running events. The sophomore clocked 15.97 for the 100-meter hurdles and crossed the line in 26.98 seconds in the 200. As a result, Healey resides in fourth place, after totaling 2,462 points during Friday's four disciplines.
Murray, who compiled 3,512 points, continued a common theme of the day, bettering his previous personal-best times in each of his running events. The Keystone State native began his afternoon with an 11.42 time for the 100-meter dash and finished things off with a 50.71 in the 400-meter dash. Murray also tied for third among the decathletes when he sailed over 6-2 in the high jump.
Woodbridge, the reigning Big South heptathlon champion, opened his first decathlon competition of the outdoor season in fine fashion. The sophomore racked up 3,458 points, after a day highlighted by his efforts in the 100-meter dash and shot put. Woodbridge ran the day's second-fastest 100, an 11.33, and heaved the shot put 39-5.75 for the competition's third-longest mark.
Murray and Woodbridge are both chasing unattached athlete Kyle Steiner. The 2007 and 2008 NCAA Division III national runner-up in the decathlon at Wisconsin-Stevens Point tallied 3,776 markers and holds a 153-point lead.
The Liberty Collegiate Invitational will resume Saturday morning at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex. The first event on the schedule is the women's pole vault, scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start. The multi events will resume with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles at 10 a.m. and the heptathlon long jump at 10:30. Finally, the gun will go off for the day's initial running event, the men's 4 x 100 relay, at 12:30 p.m.
