Liberty's Kalib Wilkinson, a member of the Flames' 2009 Big South indoor track & field championship team, posted an impressive performance during this morning's 113th running of the Boston Marathon. Wilkinson clocked a 2:24:46, the fastest time ever recorded by a current Liberty track team member.
Wilkinson (R-Sr., Silverdale, Wash.) averaged 5:32 per mile over the rolling hills of the historic Boston course, on his way to a 28th-place finish. He crossed the line 13th among American entrants and was the race's fourth finisher under 25 years of age.
Johnnie Engelhart's 2:25:19 clocking from 1983 will remain as the official school record, because he ran the time when Liberty was a NAIA institution. The marathon is an official event at the NAIA Track & Field Championship, but is not contested at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championship.
Ethiopia's Deriba Merga won the race in a time of 2:08.42, while Ryan Hall was the top American finisher. He placed third in 2:09.40.
Wilkinson completed his final year of collegiate eligibility with the Flames, after starting his career at Air Force. He was the Flames' fifth runner at the 2007 NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships, helping the team record a fifth-place finish. In his final collegiate race, Wilkinson placed eighth in the 5K at the 2009 Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships.
