Day two of the Coastal Carolina/Asics Invitational, Saturday in Conway, S.C., saw the Liberty men's and women's track & field teams notch their second NCAA regional qualifying mark in as many days and a pair of first-place finishes.
Men's Meet Recap
Anthony Bryant (R-Fr., Charlottesville, Va.) made a successful outdoor track & field debut, as he locked up in an entertaining high jump duel with defending Big South champion Jay Watson of Coastal Carolina. Watson got the better of Bryant on Saturday, clearing 7-0.5. However, Bryant was able to qualify for the NCAA Division I East Regional Championships with a 6-10.75 clearance. Bryant now sits No. 5 on Liberty's all-time men's outdoor high jump performance list.
Andrew Bartels (R-Sr., Grantham, Pa.) also translated indoor track & field success into the start of his outdoor campaign. The Big South indoor shot put titlist uncorked the best shot put of his career on Saturday, 53-0. He placed second, trailing Winthrop's Travis Coleman by just one inch. Bartels' throw was an IC4A qualifier and ranks No. 5 in Liberty history.
The Flames' final top three finisher on Saturday was freshman Kyle Powers (Waterford, Vt.). Running the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the first time in his collegiate career, Powers stopped the watch in 9:52.72 for third place.
Women's Meet Recap
The Lady Flames enjoyed success in the high jump as well, when freshman Christina Mitchell (Monroe, Va.) sailed over 5-3 to win the competition by two inches. Mitchell was the Big South champion in the event, just two weeks ago in Clemson, S.C.
Liberty's final event championship came in the 4 x 100 relay. The Lady Flames' quartet of Brittany Heath (Jr., Freeport, Grand Bahamas), Alyssa Pegues (Fr., Warner Robins, Ga.), Melanie Sims (Fr., Cleveland Heights, Ohio) and Andrea Beckles (Sr., Lynchburg, Va.) earned a comfortable victory over runner-up Seton Hall, in an ECAC-qualifying time of 47.32 seconds.
Pegues also excelled in the 100-meter dash, posting a fifth-place finish in 12.36 seconds. Fellow sprinter Chenoa Freeman (Jr., Lincoln, Del.) notched a pair of fifth-place efforts, in the 400-meter dash (57.65) and in a rare appearance at 800 meters (2:20.09).
Ashley Teer (Sr., Abbotsford, British Columbia) crossed the line just ahead of Freeman in the 800-meter final, posting a time of 2:18.70.
Liberty will return to action Saturday at 9 a.m., when the Flames and Lady Flames travel across town for the Lynchburg Invitational. The meet will be contested at Lynchburg College's Shellenberger Field.
