Liberty senior Matt Parker raced to victory in the men's 60-meter hurdles final, leading the way for the Flames' men's and women's track & field teams, Friday at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup. The Liberty men's squad sits in seventh place, while the women's team is 11th, after the first day of competition at Penn State's Horace Ashenfelter III Track in University Park, Pa.
Parker's (Rome, N.Y.) second hurdles title in as many meets provided 10 of the Flames' 17 team points on Friday. Kent State tops the men's team standings after day one, with 46.5 points. Cornell currently sits in second place, after tallying 39.5 markers.
On the women's side, freshman Olivia Charnuski (Elmira, Ontario) accounted for the Lady Flames' 2.5 points, thanks to some fine hurdling of her own. The host team, No. 10 Penn State, holds an early lead with 74 points, with Cornell 17 points back in the second position.
After posting the second-fastest qualifying time, Parker earned a clear victory in the men's 60-meter hurdles final. His winning time of 8.09 matched his own Big South-leading clocking, initially established at the Liberty Open. Parker once again scared Ken Howell's 10-year-old program record, falling one-hundredth of a second away from equaling the event standard.
Sophomore Jacey Bailey (Tamarac, Fla.) also enjoyed success on the Ashenfelter Track straightaway. Just 10 minutes before Parker's triumph, Bailey claimed a third-place finish in the men's 60-meter dash final. The Sunshine State native's official time was 6.87 seconds.
Redshirt senior Kalib Wilkinson (Silverdale, Wash.) was the Flames' other point scorer on Friday. Donning a Liberty uniform for the first time since the 2008 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships, he ran 5,000 meters in 15:19.71, which was good for eighth place. Wilkinson's time enabled him to stave off a strong challenge from Bucknell's Baron Willeford, who finished just .12 seconds behind the Liberty senior.
Speaking of close finishes, they don't get much closer than the battle between Charnuski and Kiara Crutchfield of Appalachian State in the women's 60-meter hurdles final. Both athletes were given the exact same time, 9.06, placing the duo in a tie for sixth place.
Saturday's action at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup will commence at 11 a.m., with the start of the men's pole vault and men's shot put. The men's mile run will get the running events underway, as the gun is slated to go off at 11:30 a.m., at Horace Ashenfelter III Track.
