Liberty senior Jon Hart and junior Rebekah Ricksecker captured the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's and Women's Track & Field Athlete of the Week honors, respectively, it was announced today.
Hart (Wyomissing, Pa.) won the hammer throw at last weekend's IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships and broke his own Liberty and Big South record with a 222-4 heave. The senior, who also captured the IC4A hammer crown in 2007, helped the Flames defend their IC4A team title. He now ranks No. 9 on the national performance list.
Hart earned his fifth conference weekly award of the 2008 track & field season. The Keystone State native was previously honored as Big South Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week on March 26. He also garnered Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) weekly awards on Jan. 31, Feb. 14 and April 23.
Ricksecker (Laurel, Del.) ran the two fastest 1,500-meter times of her career at the ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, last Saturday and Sunday in Princeton, N.J. She clocked a career-best 4:25.47 during the preliminary round, shaving more than three seconds off her previous best and moving up to No. 3 on Liberty's all-time performance list. Ricksecker then placed sixth in the 1,500-meter run final, running a 4:26.47.
The junior from Delaware was recognized by the Big South Conference for the second time this academic year. On Sept. 12, she was noted as Big South Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week.
Both Hart and Ricksecker will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., May 30-31 for the NCAA East Regional Championships. Hart will throw the hammer and shot put, while Ricksecker has qualified in the 1,500 meters for the second consecutive season.
