Liberty garnered a pair of Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) weekly awards, during the final week of the ECAC's 2007-08 awards program. Senior Clendon Henderson won his fifth ECAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week distinction, while sophomore Evans Kigen nabbed the ECAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week honor.
Both Flames shared the conference's weekly awards. Navy senior John Olsen was tabbed Co-Men's Track Athlete of the Week, while Fordham junior Matt DiBuono was Co-Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
Henderson (Meadow, Texas) was recognized after winning the discus competition at the prestigious Drake Relays with a 181-11 effort. He is undefeated in the discus this season and is listed No. 2 on the NCAA performance list.
Henderson had previously been honored by the ECAC on Jan. 17, Feb. 7, April 2 and April 9. He and classmate Jon Hart (Wyomissing, Pa.) paired up to win four of the ECAC's six Men's Field Athlete of the Week awards during the outdoor season.
For Kigen (Eldoret, Kenya), the recognition is his second in as many days. On Wednesday, the Liberty newcomer was honored as Big South Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week. Kigen won the 10K at the Penn Relays on April 24 by 20 seconds, clocking a personal-best 29:16.12. He provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships and is listed No. 23 nationally in the event.
Both Henderson and Kigen are scheduled to compete this weekend. Henderson will participate in his final home meet, today's Liberty Twilight Qualifier. He is entered in the men's discus at 3 p.m. and the hammer at 5:30. Kigen will travel to Durham, N.C., on Sunday for the Duke Twilight Meet. The sophomore is slated to run the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 8:35 p.m.
