The Liberty Flames raced out to a 3-0 first inning lead and never looked back, downing the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, 11-4, Sunday afternoon in the final contest of a three-game Big South series at Greenwood Field.
Liberty evens its Big South Conference mark at 3-3 and improves to 14-15 on the season. The Flames take the conference series, 2-1. UNC Asheville falls to 1-5 in the Big South and 13-21 overall.
For the second straight game, Liberty plated three runs in its first at bat of the contest. Kenneth Negron (Jr., 2B, Kingwood, Texas) opened the game by slicing a double down the left field line. Two batters later, P.K. Keller (Sr., LF, Clearwater, Fla.) singled home the Flames' leadoff hitter for a quick, 1-0 edge. Later in the inning, with runners on the corners and two out, a pickoff attempt of Garrett Young (Sr., DH, Fountain Valley, Calif.) by UNC Asheville starter Taylor Wohlwend got past first baseman Justin Schumer, allowing Keller to score the second tally of the inning. Cody Brown (Jr., 3B, Boca Raton, Fla.) followed with a RBI single to give the Flames a 3-0 lead.
In the third frame, each team scored solo runs to make it 4-1, Liberty. Keller hit a leadoff single and scored on a single by Young in the top of the inning. The Bulldogs pushed across their first run on a RBI ground out by designated hitter Beau Zinman.
The Flames added to their lead in their next time at the plate. Catcher Errol Hollinger (Jr., Upland, Calif.) belted his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall, with Negron aboard. The two-run blast put Liberty up, 6-1.
In the fifth inning, the Flames put the contest away with four more tallies. Brown doubled to lead off the uprising and scored on a single by Joseph Feely (Fr., CF, Chesapeake City, Md.). Liberty cashed in three more runs on a RBI single by Negron and a two-run double by Hollinger.
Meanwhile, starter Steven Evans (Fr., RHP, Amherst, Va.) gave the Flames a solid mound effort. The freshman right-hander allowed one run, while scattering seven hits to pick up his first collegiate win. He struck out two and walked a pair in running his mark to 1-2 on the year.
The Bulldogs scored one in the seventh and two unearned runs in the eighth frame. Jeff Jefferson (Fr., RF, Danville, Va.) added a run for Liberty on a RBI ground out in the eighth inning for the final score of 11-4.
Wohlwend took the loss to drop to 0-4. The UNC Asheville starter yielded seven runs on 10 hits over four innings.
Keller paced the 17-hit Liberty attack in his first game back from an injury suffered on Tuesday with four hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Brown and Negron added three hits each. Left fielder Chris Freeman had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs.
Liberty returns home on Tuesday to host the James Madison Dukes. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Worthington Stadium.
