Liberty senior Jon Hart has now garnered a couple pieces of hardware as a result of his efforts at last weekend's New Balance Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Previously honored as the Big South Men's Most Outstanding Field Performer for the second year in a row, Hart has now earned the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men's Field Athlete of the Week award as well.
Hart (Wyomissing, Pa.) helped the Flames repeat as Big South champions by winning the hammer and shot put titles for the second straight season and placing fifth in the discus. His 217-2 hammer heave set a new Big South meet record and currently ranks No. 10 nationally. Hart also established a new Big South meet standard on his final shot put attempt, which sailed 56-7.5.
This is the third time Hart has been recognized by the ECAC this year. The senior picked up a pair of conference honors during the 2008 indoor season, on Jan. 31 and Feb. 14. It is also the third week a Liberty athlete has been named ECAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week during the current outdoor season. Clendon Henderson (Sr., Meadow, Texas) has won the weekly honor twice this season.
Hart will throw the hammer at the prestigious Drake Relays, Saturday at 3:15 p.m. Eastern in Des Moines, Iowa. The meet will be held at the site of the 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for June 11-14.
